Rhiwbina Youth are looking for new players -
The final game of the season saw Rhiwbina lose at home to a powerful St Joes outfit.
Within 15 minutes St Joes had a try and 2 penalties on the board and Rhiwbina were
trailing 0-
A scrum to the Joes saw them push early and concede a penalty. The
Joes weren’t happy with the decision and the referee marched them back 10m. Still
protesting with the referee, he decided enough was enough and yellow carded one of
their players. From the penalty Rhiwbina got good field position and surged over
to make it 5-
Six minutes later Jacob Chilcott spotted a gap in the Joes rush defence and put on the gas. With only the full back to beat he wrong footed the last man to go under the post for Rhiwbina’s second try, which he successfully converted.
HT 12-
The second half saw a Rhiwbina player yellow carded early on and the Joes took full
advantage to get their second try. 12-
On the 15 minute mark Rhiwbina were down to 13 players for a second yellow card offence.
Ironically the Joes didn’t get their 3rd try until Rhiwbina were back up to the full
compliment of 15 players. 12-
With Rhiwbina fielding a number of U16’s players to give them a taste of youth rugby
for next season the extra size and physicality of the Joes team ultimately came thru
as they added a 4th try to end the game 12-
The final summary of the season shows the boys won 6, drew 1 and lost 2 but the most important thing is that there’s a good solid core with a lot of new U16’s players to build on for next season.
The following Rhiwbina players have represented Cardiff & District Youth this year:-
Elliot Chilcott (Captain), Owen Thomas, Dan Vella (all 4 games), Dave Gower, Dylan Casella, Tom Bird, Alex Bourne and Chris Hole earlier in season.
In the last district match Monday 18th April Cardiff & District pipped Bridgend &
District 28-
In a close fought encounter Rhiwbina registered their first loss of the season.
After 5 minutes play Pentyrch slotted an easy penalty to take a 3-
Pentyrch then hit back with 2 unconverted tries. 13-
Some good play by Rhiwbina saw them tackled on the Pentyrch 5m line and looking to
off load it. The referee thought Rhiwbina had crossed the try line and blew the whistle.
On realising his mistake he awarded Rhiwbina a 5m scrum and eventually Chris Hole
crossed to make it 13-
Within 10 minutes of the second half Jacob Chilcott slotted Rhiwbina’s second penalty.
13-
Rhiwbina were now within touching distance only to see Pentyrch cross and convert
their third try. 20-
Pentyrch further extended their lead with a penalty 23-
Rhiwbina now had 15 minutes to turn things around. A try by Elliot Chilcott on the
30 minute mark gave Rhiwbina hope but Pentyrch held firm at 23-
On a near freezing day this return fixture proved to be a tight affair compared to
the last time these two met.
The first 15min was pretty uneventful until some flowing Rhiwbina backplay saw right
wing Nick Thomas cross for an unconverted try. 0-
St Peters were soon in front when they took a quick tap from a close range penalty
to cross for their first try which was also converted. HT 7-
St Peters extended their lead to 10-
Rhiwbina had the edge in the backs and hit back with 2 superb tries by Dylan Casella
and a second for Nick Thomas to take a 10-
As the game entered the final phase Rhiwbina tried to clear their line from under
the posts with a kick that was deflected directly upward. Rhiwbina failed to deal
with it and St Peters crossed for their second try that was easily converted. 17-
Some tense moments ensued but the final whistle saw the game end in a 17-
With little rugby being played over the past 7 weeks today represented an opportunity
to finally get a game under the belt.
The last time these two sides met back in October Rhiwbina ran out convincing winners but today was a much closer affair with the winner always in doubt until the final whistle.
Rhiwbina started brightly with Outside Half Jacob Chilcott slotting an early penalty
but Llanishen were soon back on equal pegging with a penalty of their own. 3-
With a period of good pressure Rhiwbina were soon rewarded with a nicely crafted
try by Josh Madley, converted by Jake Chilcott. 3-
Instead of building on this lead Rhiwbina gave away some simple penalties allowing
Llanishen to stay in touch. HT 9-
The second half provided plenty of endeavour by both sides but the long layoff and
conditions was never going to produce a classic and a penalty to both sides took
the final score to 12-
Rhiwbina Youth marched on to their 5th successive win with a comprehensive victory
over a plucky Pentyrch side.
Within 5 minutes of the start Rhiwbina were 7-
Nick Liddle got his second try after a break down the left to make it 14-
With halftime approaching Rhiwbina increased their lead to 19-
The second half saw Rhiwbina turn the screw further as 2 more tries were added by
Lewis Davies and David Gower. A near faultless kicking display by Birdy, both out
of hand and off the floor, gave Rhiwbina a convincing 33-
Comedy moment of the game -
Rhiwbina Youth continued their excellent start to the season with their 4th successive
win over local side St Peters.
With the elements favouring St Peters, Rhiwbina were often penned back in their own
half but on the few occasions Rhiwbina got good field position, they managed to get
the penalties from outside half Jacob Chilcott to take a 6-
St Peters had their chances but 2 penalties were both pushed left.
With half time approaching St Peters were repelled several times and had to settle
for a drop goal from ex Rhiwbina player James Morris. HT 6-
Rhiwbina now playing with the wind put it to good use and managed to play the territorial game well and were unlucky to score for all the pressure they were exerting.
St Peters were far from finished and competing well. They too managed to get in the red zone but some stout Rhiwbina defence kept them out.
With 5 minutes left a cross field kick bounced awkwardly which No 6 Paul Myers gratefully
accepted to score the games first try which was converted. 13-
With literally the last play of the game, Rhiwbina full-
In a typical North Cardiff derby with plenty of committment and aggresion , Llanishen
had the benefit of the slope and wind to take a narrow 3-
The second half saw Rhiwbina quickly register the first try of the game, with the
second following on soon to give Rhiwbina a 13-

Great performance by makeshift side several players playing out of position but some cracking tries scored by good free flowing rugby.
If anybody is looking for a team bonding day with a difference give Ade Herald a
call. Ade has two boys who both play for Rhiwbina and runs Adrenaline Buzz based
in the Brecons.
As part of the continuation of the youth for next season the club took last seasons U16's and the Youth team up to do a days Gorge Walking and we had a blast. The pictures on Facebook speak for themselves.
