St Peters 27  Rhiwbina 12 (Sun 21st Feb 2010 - Away)

Tries: James Edmond and Owen Paul
Con: Hugh Meatyard

Rhiwbina 53  Llandaff North 0 (Sun 13th Dec 2009 - Home)

Report by DJ Stewie B (age 52 and a half???) - master of yoof speak :-)

2days fixture v Llandaff North RFC was played in near perfect conditions at the Whitchurch Hospital ground.

Rhiwbina started strongly and kept applying pressure throughout the game…a lot of possession and textbook passes led 2some good trys. Jack McKenzie’s run in the opening minutes of the game propelled him through the Llandaff defence, touching down the opening try beneath the posts. Hugh Meatyard converted taking Rhiwbina into the lead.

Trys by Tom Morris, Jake Sims, a second by Jack McKenzie, following with trys by Huw Brobin, and Matt Hayden. Scott Donnelly touching down 2score the final try of the half.

Second half saw the Rhiwbina trys less evident…! Why…I don’t know…or perhaps we all do…! in good fun of course…and that’s how it should be.

Owen Paul’s unstoppable momentum provided him with his “simple fall over” try and us…with a good laugh…!
James Edmond’s powerful run led 2the games final try, successfully converted by Hugh Meatyard.

Llandaff North RFC showed a lot of spirit 2day and gave us a few nail biting moments with their drives at our line…despite the score they always showed great enthusiasm 4the game…well-done boys.

Conversions x4 Hugh Meatyard

Rhiwbina 3  Glamorgan Wanderers (Sun 6th Dec 2009 - Home)

Sunshine for a change…the ground still harbouring (pun…!) the tell tale signs of the previous weeks constant wet weather… made the play sticky and heavy going… mud coating each player made the “who’s who” scenario a nightmare… Indistinguishable to all those but the trained eye…! Luckily the ref went to spec savers…!

Rhiwbina applying pressure from the start…and still suffering from injuries…were able to field a full squad… but with no replacements available took the inevitable bangs and bashes on the chin…! they did well taking nearly all the 1st half play to the Wanderers.

Scott Donnelly’s breakaway run was stopped abruptly yards from the try line when a high tackle from the Wanderers took him down… the resulting penalty kick at goal was taken by Hugh Meatyard…who showing his renown determination took Rhiwbina in to a 3point lead.

Rhiwbina won the majority of lineouts with good hands being shown by Huw Brobin…winning ball more often than not…allowing Rhiwbina to move on with the game with some slick passing.

Wanderers showed skill throughout the second half… and with some fresh legs afforded by replacements made their to main pushes at the line pay off…managing to score their 2 trys…1 sucessfully converted…

A good game…well matched…but some needless penalties given away by both squads could have been avoided…and really…they should have been…!

Thank you ref…good job…and very fair...

Penalty: - Hugh Meatyard

Rhiwbina 17 Pontypridd 21 (Sun 8th Nov 2009 - Home)

For a change…the weather was kind… and as always when we play Pontypridd… the game was a good one. Compelled to watch attentively as the boys on both sides of the field met and demonstrated their playing skills to the full.

The game kicked off to a flying start with the Rhiwbina forwards catching Pontypridd on the hop… 2 excellent tries closely followed…

Dave Gooding taking advantage of some sure passes which flowed along the advancing line of the Rhiwbina attack resulted in him scoring a powerful try against the determined Pontypridd defence.

Comparable to the breakaway run by Alun Wyn Jones at the tail end of yesterdays Wales v NZ game, our own Owen Paul faced up to a similar challenge with a long run towards the Pontypridd line…but this time…making it over…!!! and scoring a well deserved try…Confidently converted by Hugh Meatyard…

Half time came with Rhiwbina enjoying a comfortable lead…however the second half proved more of a challenge as Pontypridd fought back with punishing try’s all well converted…

Rhiwbina fell behind… but another breakaway run resulting in a brilliant try by Scott Donnelly made a Rhiwbina victory possible, but just out of reach as the final whistle blew…

Close score…close game…and it could have gone either way…

Good try’s by: Dave Gooding, Owen Paul, Scott Donnelly, conversion by Hugh Meatyard

Rhiwbina 57 Llandaff 7 (Sun 1st Nov 2009 - Home)

Ok…looks like every Sunday we have a game its going to rain…hard...! let’s get used to it…!

Opening play saw constant and determined attacks by Rhiwbina against the Llandaff backs.

Rhiwbina… try’s coming from lots of sure passing… heart stopping… breakaway try’s …try’s made by taking full advantage of the overlaps that presented themselves on Q…try’s that came from beautiful “dummies”…try’s set up…well executed and going to succeed whatever… good to watch...!

Llandaff scored a lone try against Rhiwbina…their constant effort at the try line finally rewarded… after being continually denied by a strong Rhiwbina defence. The conversion was confidently taken and made good… despite the appalling conditions.

Not singling out one player in particular, as they all played their part…brill… but…Hugh Meatyard… man of the match…I’d give you a bottle…but you’re under age…tough…! But what a great game tho…well played mate! What ever you had for breakfast (or didn’t…!)…Have the same again next week…no worries.

A good free flowing game, resulting try’s by: -

Scott Donnelly x2, James Edmond, Hugh Meatyard x2, Owen Paul x2, Jack Sanders, and Huw Brobin.

Conversions all 6 skilfully taken by Hugh Meatyard…

Pentyrch 5 Rhiwbina 24 (Sun 25th Oct 2009 - Away)

We all thought the game v Penarth RFC on the 11th October threw us some rain…no way…!

This Sunday’s fixture v Pentyrch RFC saw a fast free flowing (!) game played and enjoyed by both squads in extremely harsh conditions.

Horizontal hailstones… winds that turned umbrella’s inside out ... (even one's that aren’t suppose to…they don’t work… believe me…!) earned the boys their wings…yep their water wings…!

This exciting game to watch saw Rhiwbina taking control from the start with determined and prolonged attempts to penetrate the Pentyrch defence paying off.

An opening try by Pentyrch was their last of the game as Rhiwbina dropped a gear, and with great running, excellent sure passes (+ a few unconventional 1’s which paid off big time… are great 2watch… when they work…hey…! and they did… ace…!) sealed the Rhiwbina win…the boy’s are working as a team…brill…!

A great “steal” + a long run from Owen very nearly added to the try count… brill…! Try’s by Dave Gooding, Jack Mac, Jake Chilcott, and Hugh Meatyard, who also converted 2 in these appalling conditions made the final score……….

Rhiwbina RFC 24, Pentyrch RFC 5

Rhiwbina RFC U15s…still on form…still missing players (GWSoon)…but still…

Awesome…! Well-done Lads…and well played… your all stars…!

Penarth 10 Rhiwbina 17 (Sun 11th Oct 2009 - Away)

Relentless rain tried to dampen the spirits of both teams’ today…

Far from it… instead, we all experienced an excellent display of rugby skills demonstrated by both squads in the most well matched game played this season.

Rhiwbina, still fielding a side hampered by injury, “flowed” …(like the rain!).

In difficult conditions, skill, sure passes (excluding a few “hot potatoes”…) and some nail biting last minute tackles denied Penarth any further score.

So…after giving away a converted try, and a penalty (which could have been avoided…!) caught up, and held on to an eventual lead.

The game “flowed” (again like the rain…!) aided by the knowledge and control of the officiating referee, (makes all the difference…!) which led to the enjoyment of the game by the “boy’s” from both squads. It’s what it’s all about. Thanks for that….

Try’s by Huw Brobin, Dave Gooding, Owen Paul, and a conversion by Jake Chilcott sealed a well contested Rhiwbina win.

Penarth RFC 10 Rhiwbina RFC 17

Gamorgan Wanderers -v- Rhiwbina (Sun 4th Oct 2009 - Away)

Rhiwbina RFC U15s were only able to field 14 players today due to the excessive amount of injuries suffered lately..!

However the squad played extremely well and some good rugby was demonstrated by both sides despite the obvious draw backs encountered by Rhiwbina......

Unfortunately Jack came off injured followed by Connor which left us with 12players in the 2nd half...After repeated requests to ask the coach come referee if he would reduce his squad in compliance with WRU Pathway - U14s to under U19s - laws, section re: Team size, and I quote: - " The WRU requires that both teams shall field the same number of players throughout the game"....etc.

"UN-sporting" , this gesture wouldn't even be entertained, its all about morals really... and so the RRFC squad battled to the end and put up with the onslaught and free play afforded by our lack of defence....

Not good for the boys, and this "win at all costs" is definitely not good for the game..... Score...I don't think it applies.... Do you?

Chwarae teg.....!

Cardiff Schools U15's Final Squad (Mon 21st Sept 2009)

Cardiff Schools U15's settled on the final playing squad for the season and this saw Rhiwbina successfully get in 9 players. The players selected are Jacob Chilcot, David Gooding, Zach Bartlett, Jack Sanders, Huw Brobin, Hugh Meatyard, Owen Paul, Ollie Rees and Scott Donnelly.

Well done guys!

Rumney 31 Rhiwbina 17 (Sun 20th Sept 2009 - Away)

Very physical game with Rumney running in the try's, however Rhiwbina made a good comeback in the 2nd half taking control of the game but leaving it to late to better a Rumney 31 RRFC 17 score.

Try's by Jake Chilcott, Huw Brobin, Ollie Rees with a conversion by Jake Chilcott.

Cardiff Schools Trial Game (Fri 11th Sept 2009 - Away)

Cardiff Schools U15's travelled down to Swansea for 2 trial games at the St Helens ground. Rhiwbina were once again well represented with players Jacob Chilcot, David Gooding, Zach Bartlett, Jack Sanders, Huw Brobin, Hugh Meatyard, Owen Paul and Scott Donnelly picked to play.

Though the second side came off second best against a well drilled Swansea side the first team were narrowly beaten 14-8 with Rhiwbina's David Gooding getting the only try for Cardiff.

Nelson Tournament (Sun 6th Sept 2009 - Away)

Game 1: Rhiwbina 0 Nelson 24
Game 2: Rhiwbina 0 Pontyberem 42
Game 3: Rhiwbina 12 Keynsham 10

Rhiwbina turned up at the Nelson Tournament with some of the toughest teams at this age group.

With the likes of hosts Nelson, Pontyberem, Cleve and St Peters taking part, this was always going to be a hard tournament for Rhiwbina, especially with key players missing and having only one substitute.

The first 2 games are best forgotten as Rhiwbina were put to the sword by the eventual pool winners Nelson and pool runners up Pontyberem.

The last pool game saw Rhiwbina more evenly matched against Bristol side Keynsham. Rhiwbina got the first try as No 8 Dave G broke from the back of a scrum in his own half to score under the post. This proved to be essential to the final result as the conversion was duly slotted over.

Keynsham hit back with a try of their own but was not converted. Half time saw the result 7-5 to Rhiwbina.

The second half saw Rhiwbina kick off with a fine kick to the left touchline. Dave G sprinted up and took the restart and sprinted in to take the score to 12-5

Keynsham had the last say in the game as they scored a try. Luckily for Rhiwbina the kick was missed and Rhiwbina ran out 12-10 winners.

All in all a tough tournament but good to see the boys finishing on a high with a good performance and win.
